Humanitarian relief in South Sudan

efter MEDAIR UNITED STATES

Background:

Medair has worked in South Sudan since 1992 and is one of the most active humanitarian relief organizations in the country.

The conflict has cost almost 400,000 lives and left six million people, of a population of 11 million, desperately hungry. Alarming levels of child malnutrition are seen across the country, with some of the highest rates in the world. Families have been uprooted and children have been separated from parents. There are disease outbreaks and access to safe water is limited. Displaced people have nowhere to sleep and no protection. Women have few places to safely give birth. Hundreds of thousands of lives are at risk.

Medair’s major humanitarian activities:

- Providing free primary health care (including vaccination), either through direct delivery, including mobile clinics, emergency response or supporting existing local clinics.
- Detection and treatment for common diseases and outbreaks.
- Providing malnutrition screening and treatment, especially for children under five years of age, lactating mothers and the elderly.
- Providing community-based teaching and support groups to prevent illness (including health & nutrition promotion, Care Groups, community health worker).
- Caring for pregnant and breastfeeding women (including antenatal, postnatal, and providing deliveries).
- Providing mental health, psychosocial support and caring for survivors of sexual assault.
- Providing sanitation support, including the construction of latrine and hand washing station.
- Providing hygiene items such soap, water purification tablet and teaching hygiene practice in the local community.
- Providing safe drinking water, including building water pump, well, and training local community on their maintenance.
- Providing essential household and shelter supplies, especially during emergencies.

Medair helps people who are suffering in remote and devastated communities around the world survive crises, recover with dignity, and develop skills to build a better future. For more information please visit our website at www.medair.org or contact united.states@medair.org.
